A Giant at Port of Runavík

On Wednesday, June 17, Runavík welcomed the large and impressive cruise ship Rotterdam from Holland America Line, marking one of the most notable port calls of the season.

At 300 meters in length, Rotterdam dominated the harbor skyline as it arrived at Port of Runavík.

On board were 2,677 passengers along with a crew of 1,004, making it one of the largest vessels to visit the area this year.

The ship is a sister vessel to Nieuw Statendam, which had called at Kongshavn in previous years and is already familiar to the local community.

The arrival created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the area. From early morning, preparations had been made to receive the ship, with port authorities, local operators, and businesses working together to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience. Many visitors disembarked to explore Runavík and the surrounding region, joining guided excursions and discovering the natural landscapes, culture, and hospitality of the Faroe Islands.

Local transport providers and tour operators were actively engaged throughout the day, offering excursions across the island, while shops, cafés, and attractions saw increased activity as visitors made the most of their time ashore. The visit not only brought life to the harbor but also provided an important boost to the local tourism economy.

The Faroese agent for the call was Tor Shipping, which coordinated the visit in close collaboration with local stakeholders.

Overall, the call by Rotterdam was regarded as a special occasion for the region—both a logistical achievement and a celebration of Runavík as an emerging cruise destination. The day left a strong impression on both visitors and locals alike.
