Cruise Season 2025 Wraps Up with Strong Results in Tórshavn

The 2025 cruise season has officially concluded. This year, 47 ships visited Tórshavn, bringing 19,488 passengers and 9,287 crew members. Despite nine weather-related cancellations, the season was considered highly successful.

The largest vessel to call this year was Norwegian Star, arriving on September 9 with 2,198 guests plus crew. The day was bustling with activity, benefiting local shops and cafés, even though the visit was slightly delayed by weather.

Most visiting ships were smaller, carrying fewer than 1,000 passengers. These accounted for 85% of all calls, with only seven ships exceeding that number. The average passenger count per ship was 415, excluding crew.

Reception Service Enhances Visitor Experience

Last year, a dedicated reception service was launched through a partnership between Port of Tórshavn and Visit Tórshavn. Located at the ferry terminal, it welcomes cruise guests where shuttle buses stop. For larger ships, the service extends into the city center with “Ask Me” staff guiding visitors.

The reception initiative is seen as essential for ensuring a positive experience for both guests and residents. Plans for 2026 include expanding the service and extending operating hours to further improve visitor satisfaction.

Survey Shows Positive Attitude Toward Cruise Tourism

A new survey was conducted among local businesses interacting with cruise guests. Of approximately 80 companies contacted, 23 responded (27.4%).

  • 91.7% were satisfied or very satisfied with cruise-related information.

  • 72.8% expressed a positive attitude toward cruise visitors.

  • When asked if Tórshavn is well-prepared for cruise tourism:

    • 30.4% said yes,

    • 43.5% said yes, but improvements are needed,

    • 8.7% said almost,

    • 17.4% said no, significant work remains.

While participation was limited, the survey indicates a shift toward a more welcoming view of cruise tourism compared to previous years. Businesses highlighted practical improvements still needed, such as more public restrooms and waste bins.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Port of Tórshavn and Visit Tórshavn expressed satisfaction with the collaboration and are already planning enhancements for next season. Several concrete initiatives will be implemented in the coming months to ensure Tórshavn Cruise 2026 starts strong—benefiting residents, the city, and visitors alike.
