Selvík Energy | A Breakthrough for the Faroese Maritime Industry

The Faroe Islands are marking a significant step forward in maritime enterprise with the acquisition of the tanker Selvík Ice by P/F Selvík Energy in Tórshavn. The vessel, formerly known as Thun Glory, is already well‑known in the Faroe Islands from the years it transported fuel for Statoil and Shell. Now, under Faroese ownership, it is set to play an even larger role on the international stage.


The Selvík Ice, built in 2001, is 104 meters long, 15 meters wide, and powered by a robust 3,000 HP Wärtsilä engine supported by an auxiliary shaft generator and three Volvo generators. As an ice‑class vessel, it is engineered for harsh Arctic conditions, and its crew is specially trained for navigation in icy waters—reflecting the strong international standards required for tankers operating in the Barents Sea.

With a capacity of nearly 7,000 cubic meters—around seven million liters—the ship can carry up to eight different types of fuel, though normally it transports one or two at a time. Since 2020, the vessel has been active in supplying fuel to ships operating in the Barents Sea and delivering oil to communities in Svalbard. Under its new Faroese ownership, this will continue to be its primary mission.


Because winter brings fewer vessels to supply in the Barents region, Selvík Ice recently returned to the Faroe Islands for classification and upgrades. Extensive work has now brought the vessel into excellent condition, making it even better suited for its demanding Arctic operations.


The ship currently sails with an international crew, though Selvík Energy hopes to gradually bring Faroese seafarers on board as opportunities arise. The operational schedule is demanding: the vessel is expected to operate in the Barents Sea approximately eleven months a year. After a brief visit to the Faroe Islands before Christmas, it is not expected to return again until late 2026.


Fuel is loaded in Fredericia, Denmark, before the ship sails north to unload in the Barents Sea—a cycle that typically takes about two weeks before returning to Denmark for the next loading.

Selvík Ice is financed through Realurin, registered under FAS, and home‑ported in Sørvágur. With a nine‑member crew and a long list of improvements, the vessel stands as a proud example of Faroese capability and ambition in the Arctic maritime sector.


During its stay in the Faroe Islands, it also received a visit from the Faroese Seamen’s Mission, where prayers were offered for the ship and crew—an expression of the country’s enduring maritime traditions.


The Faroese Seamen’s Mission extends heartfelt congratulations and blessings to the owners of Selvík Ice, celebrating this as a meaningful step for Faroese industry, Arctic shipping competence, and national maritime confidence.
