TÓRSHAVNAR HAVN | Shore power capacity to be significantly expanded

Shore power capacity at Vestara Bryggja is set to increase substantially, a development that will significantly reduce noise and emissions from ships while they are docked. Once the upgrade is completed, nearby residential areas around Vestara Vág will no longer be affected by ship engines running in port.

The Faroese government has allocated DKK 2 million in funding to support shore power projects, inviting five ports to apply for the scheme. The Port of Tórshavn applied and was granted DKK 1.25 million in funding. The total cost of the Vestara Bryggja project is estimated at DKK 2.5 million.

When the system is fully operational, the amount of electricity available to vessels at Vestara Bryggja will more than double. This will allow the majority of ships calling at the quay to connect to shore power while alongside, rather than relying on onboard generators.

Port authorities have welcomed the funding and expressed their satisfaction with the project, noting that the upgrade will enable improved services for both vessels and local residents in the Vestara Vág area.
