ENGLISH | SMJ- Faroese aquaculture expertise

In the wild, only about one in a thousand salmon survive to maturity. By contrast, more than half of farmed salmon successfully journey from egg to harvest. While this may seem modest compared to mammal farming, it significantly reduces mortality rates compared to nature.

The key difference lies in the earliest phases—from egg to fry. With advanced biological and technical management, we can achieve survival rates far beyond what's possible naturally. And there's still potential for improvement. Success depends on water quality, good system design, and daily management.

In recent years, SMJ has delivered several successful land-based aquaculture projects. The expertise spans from initial concept and detailed design to tendering, procurement, project management, and commissioning.

Some recent successful projects in the Faroe Islands and Iceland include facilities in NauteyriNorðtoftirSilfurstjarnanStaðurStrondViðareiði 🐟🏔️

After years in operation, the results speak clearly:

- Excellent fish health and welfare

- Low mortality rates, well below industry average

- Strong growth performance

Seeing a project evolve from initial sketches to a fully operational facility is always rewarding. At SMJ, we're proud to have played a key role in these achievements and deeply value our collaborations with Bakkafrost, Háafell, Samherji hf., and many dedicated project partners.
