Faroe Islands plans new patrol and rescue vessel to replace aging Tjaldrið

The Faroese Government has proposed allocating DKK 4 million in the 2027 Finance Bill to begin planning and designing a new patrol and rescue vessel that will replace the 50-year-old Tjaldrið, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries.
The objective is to provide the Faroe Islands with a modern maritime preparedness and fisheries inspection capability that can meet the responsibilities and obligations the country has at sea, both nationally and internationally. A new vessel is also regarded as essential for strengthening the Faroese oil spill and environmental response capacity and reducing emergency response times in rescue operations.
The Faroese maritime area stretches approximately 400 nautical miles from one end to the other, while more than 100 vessels are on average operating in Faroese waters every day. With maritime traffic increasing, the demands placed on search and rescue services, fisheries inspections, and emergency preparedness are greater than ever.
The Government notes that the changing security and geopolitical situation in the North Atlantic has increased the strategic importance of the region. A new patrol and rescue vessel would enhance the Faroe Islands' ability to participate in joint exercises, help protect subsea cables and other critical seabed infrastructure, and support logistical operations carried out in cooperation with neighbouring countries and allied partners.
Further planning work will continue over the coming years, with the aim of having the new vessel ready for service by 2030.
The total construction cost of a vessel in this class is estimated at between DKK 300 million and DKK 400 million.
