Cleaner shipping initiative strengthened through new global partnership

Annfinn Hjelm, CCO of the Environmental Port Index (EPI), participated in the GreenPort Conference in Portsmouth, where an important development for cleaner shipping was announced.
From 1 January 2027, the Environmental Port Index (EPI) and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH)'s Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will operate as complementary programmes under the IAPH umbrella, with OceanScore providing a shared platform and administration.
The new setup will combine ESI's assessment of a vessel's environmental profile with EPI's measurement of actual environmental performance during port calls, giving ports a stronger basis for rewarding cleaner ships and supporting maritime decarbonisation.
Speaking from the conference, Hjelm welcomed the collaboration and highlighted the value of continued dialogue between ports and industry stakeholders on sustainable shipping.
