New shipping route to strengthen trade links between the Faroe Islands and Scotland

A new regular freight service between the Faroe Islands and Scrabster, Scotland, is set to launch this autumn, creating a faster and more direct connection between the Faroes and the UK market.

Operated by Samskip, the service is planned to run twice weekly from Runavík, via Suðuroy, to Scrabster, providing businesses with a reliable and efficient transport corridor for exports and imports. The route will be served by MV Silver Arctic, a vessel well suited for operations in North Atlantic waters.

A key driver behind the new service is the export of Faroese salmon. Samskip and FarCargo, the transport company of Bakkafrost, have entered into a long-term agreement that will provide a stable foundation for regular sailings.

“Faroe Islands exports significant volumes of fresh seafood through the UK to global markets. By establishing a direct service between the Faroes and Scrabster, we can offer a highly efficient and dependable transport solution,” said Sjúrður Johansen, Managing Director of Samskip Faroe Islands.

Located in northern Scotland, Scrabster offers strategic access to major transport networks and logistics hubs across the United Kingdom. Through partnerships with local service providers, Samskip has developed a complete logistics solution that includes cargo handling, transhipment, and onward distribution throughout the UK.

For Bakkafrost, the new route represents an important opportunity to ensure fresh salmon reaches customers quickly and reliably.

“Our business depends on fresh salmon arriving at market as fast and efficiently as possible,” said Símun Jacobsen, Sales Director at Bakkafrost. “The new Scrabster route provides a direct and dependable transport solution, while also helping to re-establish a regular maritime connection between Suðuroy and Scotland.”

While salmon exports form the backbone of the new service, the route will also be available to other Faroese and British businesses, offering additional freight capacity in both directions.

The new freight connection is expected to begin operations in mid-Sept

ember, with further details and sailing schedules to be announced in the coming weeks.
