In the coming year, Klaksvík Harbor will focus on major and exciting projects to increase activity and revenue, while also addressing smaller but essential improvements that enhance conditions and services for customers, says Sylvia Thomsen, Chair of the Harbor and Industry Committee.
The 2026 budget includes significant industrial projects: shore power for the Kósakaj pier, a boat slip for the Borðoyarvík marina, upgraded electrical supply at the marina in Vág, and measures to generate more income for Klaksvík Harbor.
Shore Power at Kósakaj Pier
Providing shore power for vessels at Kósakaj is not new, but conditions have been inadequate. The electrical panel needs updating, and mooring arrangements have been problematic. This has caused frustration for nearby residents. Sylvia prioritized this issue and secured approval in her first budget as a council member. Plans include upgrading the electrical panel to meet current standards and relocating mooring points to prevent cables from obstructing work along the quay.
Boat Slip at Borðoyarvík
Since joining the council, Sylvia has received numerous requests from boat owners for a slipway. She agrees it is surprising that the leading fishing town in the Faroe Islands lacks such a facility, forcing smaller boats to go to Leirvík for maintenance. A half-million kroner has been allocated for this in the first phase.
Increasing Revenue for Klaksvík Harbor
At Grótrætt, the plan is to install sheet piling between piers and build a quay between them. One reason is that energy company MAGN will expand its oil storage in the area. This is expected to significantly boost harbor revenue. Sylvia calls it an exciting and important project for Klaksvík Harbor and the local community, which the council aims to support by creating the right conditions.
“Our goal is to systematically create the best framework at Klaksvík Harbor for improved conditions and services for customers, while setting ambitious long-term targets for growth and development,” says Sylvia Thomsen, Chair of the Harbor and Industry Committee and council member representing Sjálvstýrið.
