Bakkafrost and ELDI Sign Major Agreement for Seal-Protection Nets
Bakkafrost and ELDI have strengthened a partnership that has spanned more than three decades, signing a comprehensive agreement for the supply of MARVOX-S aquaculture nets designed to meet the demanding conditions of Faroese fish farming sites.
The two companies have worked closely together for over 30 years, developing solutions specifically tailored to the Faroe Islands' exposed farming environments. The Faroese farming areas are widely recognised as among the most weather-exposed and operationally demanding aquaculture locations in the world.
A Response to Growing Seal Challenges
In 2023, the Faroese aquaculture industry faced a significant new challenge as seal-related incidents increased considerably around fish farming sites.
Since then, Bakkafrost and ELDI have worked systematically to develop effective protection solutions capable of safeguarding fish stocks while maintaining operational efficiency.
The result is MARVOX-S, a high-strength HDPE net developed and manufactured by ELDI. The net combines high breaking strength with an optimised twine thickness, creating a balance between durability and flexibility. According to the company, the product has been specifically designed to perform under some of the most demanding conditions found in modern aquaculture.
Focus on Sustainability
A key feature of the MARVOX-S solution is that the material can be recycled at the end of its service life.
Bjarni Larsen, Aquaculture Director at Bakkafrost, highlighted the importance of this aspect, noting that both companies place strong emphasis on sustainability and responsibility throughout the value chain.
According to Larsen, the ability to combine robust protection with recyclable materials aligns with the long-term environmental ambitions of both organisations and supports future industry development.
Large-Scale Supply Agreement
The collaboration has now resulted in a major supply agreement under which ELDI will deliver a significant number of MARVOX-S nets to Bakkafrost.
The nets are designed to withstand harsh conditions while protecting salmon stocks and reducing the risk of damage caused by seals.
For ELDI Føroyar, the agreement represents an important milestone and provides a strong foundation for continued investment in equipment development and services for the Faroese market.
Continued Innovation for Faroese Aquaculture
ELDI Føroyar, which is part of an international group, views the agreement as a testament to the strong relationship between the two companies and a signal of continued confidence in locally adapted aquaculture technology.
Signar Poulsen, Managing Director of ELDI Føroyar, expressed gratitude for the trust shown by Bakkafrost and said the company looks forward to continuing its collaboration on innovation and development.
The shared objective, he noted, is to support sustainable growth and deliver the best possible solutions for the Faroese aquaculture industry as it continues to evolve in increasingly demanding operating environments.
