Smyril Line expands North Atlantic connectivity with new freight vessel Skipanes

The Faroe Islands continue to strengthen their role as a vital North Atlantic transport hub as Smyril Line officially takes delivery of its newest Ro-Ro freight vessel, Skipanes, from the CIMC Raffles shipyard in Yantai, China.

The addition of Skipanes marks a significant milestone for the Faroese shipping company and reinforces freight connections between mainland Europe, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.

"We are very pleased to have taken delivery of Skipanes, which will strengthen our freight services in the North Atlantic. This marks a milestone in the company's history and an important step in the development of our fleet," said Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, CEO of Smyril Line.

Built specifically for year-round operations in the demanding conditions of the North Atlantic, Skipanes measures approximately 190 metres in length and significantly expands the company's freight capacity. The vessel offers 3,300 lane metres of cargo space, equivalent to room for more than 240 standard freight trailers, making it particularly well suited for the transport of trucks, trailers and other rolling cargo.

The new vessel also reflects the industry's transition toward more sustainable shipping. Skipanes is equipped with a battery system, prepared for shore power connectivity, and designed to support a future conversion to e-methanol fuel, helping reduce the environmental footprint of maritime transport.

Reliable shipping links are essential for island communities and businesses across the North Atlantic. By increasing freight capacity and strengthening connections between Europe, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, Skipanes will help ensure efficient supply chains and support growing trade throughout the region.

As global interest in North Atlantic shipping routes continues to rise, the arrival of Skipanes highlights both the strategic importance of the Faroe Islands and Smyril Line's continued investment in resilient, future-ready maritime infrastructure.
