Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen has revealed the design for Smyril Line’s groundbreaking new headquarters and ferry terminal at the historic Eastern Harbour in Tórshavn. This landmark development is set to revive the public waterfront and celebrate the maritime heritage of the Faroe Islands.

A Multi‑Functional Maritime Hub
Spanning approximately 8,000 m², the complex will integrate three key functions:
A state-of-the-art ferry terminal, complete with passenger gangways and check-in facilities
Modern office spaces for Smyril Line’s administrative operations
A logistics centre supporting the port’s freight operations
Notably, it reintroduces a public ramp and outdoor promenade, reconnecting the community to the water—areas long closed due to security protocols.

Design Rooted in Faroese Legacy
The architectural vision draws its inspiration from the forms and traditions of local boatbuilding:
A flowing wooden facade echoes the contours of traditional Faroese fishing boats, crafted with a single axe and part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list
Structural elements emulate hand-built coastal pathways, with tiered levels leading down to small wooden boathouses nestled against cliffs
Reviving Community and Culture
Henning Larsen’s design revives the nostalgic charm of 1950s Tórshavn—when crowds once gathered at the Eastern Harbour to see off travelers—by clearly separating passenger and freight flows, restoring public connection to the harbour.
Design director Ósbjørn Jacobsen noted, “Our design is a testament to the captivating beauty and maritime legacy of the Faroe Islands”, citing the elegant wooden forms that draw directly from local seafaring traditions.
Seamless Integration with the Cityscape
Located just steps from the Faroese parliament, the building’s wood-and-concrete palette harmonizes with Tórshavn’s landscape. It balances robust, Nordic architectural sensibilities with elements of natural warmth and materiality.

The design team emphasizes its seasonal adaptability, ensuring a comfortable visitor experience year-round. The terminal includes a double-level waiting area, café, customs facilities, and a terrace garden that doubles as a scenic public amenity.
The Path Ahead
Construction, a joint effort between Smyril Line, Tórshavn Municipality, and the Port of Tórshavn—with support from Articon, LBF Consulting Engineers, and other partners—commenced in June 2024. Completion is scheduled for summer 2026.
As one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the Faroes, the development not only serves Smyril Line’s operational needs but also reestablishes the Eastern Harbour as a vibrant, civic waterfront—blending cultural heritage, functionality, and contemporary design.
