Akranes delivered to strengthen Smyril Line’s North Atlantic freight network

Faroese shipping operator Smyril Line has officially taken delivery of Akranes, the second of two purpose-built ro-ro freight vessels constructed at China’s CIMC Raffles shipyard.
The new vessel is expected to begin its journey to the Faroe Islands shortly, following the delivery of its sister ship, Skipanes, earlier this year.
Together, the two vessels represent a significant investment in the future of freight transport across the North Atlantic, increasing capacity and supporting growing trade volumes between the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Denmark and mainland Europe.
Designed by Danish naval architecture company Knud E. Hansen, Akranes has been developed specifically for North Atlantic operations, combining high cargo capacity with modern efficiency and environmental performance. Following successful sea trials and final technical adjustments, the vessel is now ready to enter service.

At 190 metres in length, Akranes offers approximately 3,300 lane metres of cargo space, enabling it to transport between 220 and 240 trailers as well as up to 300 cars.
The vessel is also equipped with 100 reefer connections, providing capacity for temperature-controlled cargo.
Akranes is fitted with methanol-ready propulsion technology, reflecting the industry's transition towards lower-emission operations.
Additional environmental features include a battery system and the capability to connect to shore power while in port, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
