Global shipping is entering a period of unprecedented change. Rising geopolitical tensions, increasing security concerns, and the industry's ambitious decarbonization agenda are creating new challenges for shipowners and maritime operators around the world. For the Faroe Islands, a nation deeply dependent on international trade and maritime transport, these developments carry particular significance.
These issues were at the center of discussions during the recent annual meeting, board meeting, and international shipping conference hosted by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) in Rome. Industry leaders, government representatives, regulators, and international organizations gathered to address the most pressing challenges facing global shipping.
The message from the conference was clear: global shipping is navigating a complex landscape shaped by geopolitical instability and the need for a greener future. Yet the sector remains a cornerstone of the world economy, with approximately 80 percent of global trade transported by sea.
Why It Matters to the Faroe Islands
As an island nation in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands rely heavily on both imports and exports. The country's economy, food security, and international competitiveness depend on efficient, reliable, and open maritime trade routes.
Recent global events—including disruptions in the Red Sea, the war in Ukraine, growing trade tensions, and shifting geopolitical alliances—have already affected international logistics networks, shipping costs, and supply chain reliability. These challenges highlight how closely connected the Faroese economy is to developments far beyond its shores.
“Faroese prosperity depends on shipping working effectively,” said Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, Chairman of the Faroese Shipowners' Association for Merchant Ships and board member of the International Chamber of Shipping.
“This is not only about our own vessels but about the entire global trading system. It is therefore essential that the Faroese shipping industry has a voice when international frameworks and regulations are being developed.”
Geopolitical Risks Top Industry Concerns
At the conference, ICS presented its latest Maritime Barometer Report 2025–2026, based on responses from shipping stakeholders across the world.
According to the report, geopolitical uncertainty is now viewed as the single greatest challenge facing global shipping. The industry also highlighted increasingly complex regulations, the need for substantial investments to support the green transition, and continued uncertainty regarding the future fuels that will power shipping in the decades ahead.
At the same time, workforce development, maritime education, cybersecurity, and digitalization are expected to become increasingly important priorities for the sector.
For smaller maritime nations such as the Faroe Islands, these trends represent both challenges and opportunities. Maintaining a competitive maritime industry will require investment in skills, technology, innovation, and international cooperation.
Navigating the Largest Transformation in Shipping History
The shipping industry is currently facing a dual challenge: responding to geopolitical crises while simultaneously undertaking the largest environmental transformation in its history.
The drive toward lower emissions and carbon neutrality is accelerating across the maritime sector, requiring new technologies, alternative fuels, updated infrastructure, and major capital investments. Industry leaders emphasized that achieving these goals will only be possible through close collaboration between governments, regulators, international organizations, and shipping companies.
“Shipping is being asked to manage geopolitical crises while carrying out the largest green transition in its history,” Rasmussen noted. “That requires international cooperation, clear frameworks, and realistic regulation. The Faroe Islands should be an active participant in that work.”
The Importance of International Cooperation
A recurring conclusion from the Rome meetings was that broad international cooperation will be vital to ensuring supply chain resilience, maintaining competitiveness, and delivering a realistic and effective green transition.
For the Faroe Islands, participation in international maritime forums is increasingly important. With shipping forming the backbone of the nation's trade and economic activity, influencing global maritime policy is no longer simply a matter for larger shipping nations—it is also a strategic issue for smaller maritime economies.
New Leadership at International Chamber of Shipping
The annual meeting also saw a leadership transition within the International Chamber of Shipping. John Denholm was elected as the new Chairman of ICS, succeeding Emanuele Grimaldi, who served in the role for the past four years.
The International Chamber of Shipping represents more than 80 percent of the world's merchant fleet and is the leading global organization for national shipowners' associations. The Faroese Shipowners' Association has been a member of ICS since 2014, ensuring that the Faroe Islands remain represented in discussions shaping the future of global maritime transport.
As global shipping undergoes profound transformation, the Faroe Islands have a clear stake in the outcome. From trade connectivity and supply chain security to sustainability and innovation, the decisions being made today will help define the future of one of the world's most maritime-dependent societies.
