Heðin I. Abrahamsen has completed his PhD on wave‑generated currents, successfully defending his dissertation at Kongshøll. The assessment committee praised both the scientific quality and the clarity of his defense.

His research addresses a growing challenge in modern aquaculture: as sheltered areas become scarce, fish farms are moving into more exposed waters where strong waves and turbulence threaten both equipment and fish welfare.
Abrahamsen developed a numerical model to identify where wave‑generated currents arise and how they deform fish cages. Measurements from the exposed site at Sandsvág revealed significant current activity during high‑wave conditions.
His work links wave height, current strength, and cage deformation, providing tools to improve the safety and sustainability of salmon farming in harsh environments.
The project was supervised by researchers from the University of the Faroe Islands and industry partners and funded by Fírum, Innovationsfonden, the University of the Faroe Islands, Mowi, Betri Foundation, and Føroyskgrunnurin.
