South Korea shows growing interest in Faroese seafood

A growing interest in Faroese seafood and trade opportunities has put the Faroe Islands on South Korea’s radar, following a recent visit by a South Korean delegation to the Faroe Islands.

The delegation was led by Yang Young Jin, Director General of South Korea’s Fisheries Policy Bureau, and visited the Faroe Islands to explore opportunities for increased trade and cooperation between the two countries.

During their stay, the delegation met with representatives from the Faroese business community and visited leading seafood companies, including Pelagos and Bergfrost in Fuglafjørður.

According to Niels Winther, CEO of the Faroese Chamber of Commerce (Vinnuhúsið), the Faroe Islands are particularly interested in establishing a free trade agreement with South Korea.

"Our primary objective is to secure a free trade agreement between the Faroe Islands and South Korea," Winther stated, noting that South Korean interest in Faroese products has increased significantly in recent months.

The visit follows a Faroese trade mission to South Korea in June and is seen as a positive step toward strengthening commercial relations between the two nations. Discussions focused on seafood exports, market access, and the long-term potential for expanding trade.

"There appears to be genuine interest in purchasing Faroese seafood products and, over time, developing trade even further," said Winther.

The South Korean delegation also met with representatives from the Faroese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries. During the visit, the parties signed a Declaration of Intent aimed at fostering cooperation and supporting the continued development of Faroese seafood exports to the South Korean market.

As global demand for high-quality seafood continues to grow, South Korea could become an increasingly important market for Faroese exporters, creating new opportunities for the Faroese fishing and aquaculture industries.
