Faroese Expertise Drives Major Milestone in Icelandic Aquaculture

A significant step forward for Nordic aquaculture has been achieved this week as Faroese and Icelandic partners successfully completed Construction Phase C2

at Háafell’s smolt production facility in Iceland. This milestone marks a major advancement in the region’s sustainable fish farming ambitions.

Just one year ago, Háafell inaugurated its C1 smolt station, laying the foundation for future growth. Today, the facility has expanded with four new 600 m³ tanks, reinforcing its capacity and commitment to innovation.

Collaboration Across Borders

The success of this project is rooted in a unique partnership that combines Faroese expertise with Icelandic vision. Key contributors include:

  • SMJ – Design and planning

  • GroAqua – Advanced feeding systems

  • KJ – Pipes and technical equipment

Driving Innovation and Sustainability

Projects like Háafell’s expansion highlight the importance of cross-border partnerships in advancing technology and environmental responsibility. The combined efforts of Faroese and Icelandic specialists ensure that the facility is equipped to meet growing demand while maintaining high standards of fish welfare and resource efficiency.

About the Partners

  • SMJ: Leading Faroese engineering and design firm specializing in aquaculture infrastructure.

  • GroAqua: Provider of advanced feeding solutions for sustainable fish farming.

  • KJ: Experts in piping and technical systems for aquaculture facilities.

Looking Ahead

With Phase C2 now complete, Háafell is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory, supported by innovative solutions and strong partnerships. This achievement underscores the Faroe Islands’ role as a key contributor to the development of aquaculture across the North Atlantic.

Hjörtur Erlendsson CEO of Hampidjan and Chairman of ELDI said:

“The opportunities in aquaculture have never been greater as the need for aquaculture products has never been more and is growing, not only in salmon but also in other fish species around the world. With the establishment of ELDI, we are combining the capabilities needed to address these challenges in a targeted manner and with clear strategic planning. Our goal is to be a driving force in the development of the industry and continue to grow on the strong foundation we have today; closer proximity to customers than others have, decades of knowledge and experience in the production of aquaculture equipment, Hampidjan’s corporate culture where relentless product development is at the forefront and the production efficiency that we are building up in India.”

The transition becomes fully effective on 1 January 2026, but collaboration across the three organizations has already begun. Teams are working closely on product development, service integration and customer support to ensure a smooth shift into the new structure.
