Faroese expert shares emission insights at APP Winter Conference

A Faroese maritime specialist, Annfinn Hjelm —now widely regarded as one of the leading international voices in port‑development strategies related to emissions—took centre stage at the APP Winter Conference in Hawaii, where he presented groundbreaking work on how ports can use data‑driven tools to track and reduce emissions from cruise ships.

At the conference, Hjelm introduced participants to the capabilities of EPI, an advanced digital framework designed to help ports measure, visualise and understand the development of emissions over time. EPI provides ports with structured datasets, comparable indicators, and transparent reporting tools that make it easier to evaluate the environmental impact of visiting ships and the effectiveness of local emission‑reduction initiatives.

The system is increasingly viewed as a critical instrument for ports seeking credible, measurable and actionable climate strategies. By turning complex environmental data into clear insights, EPI gives port authorities a way to support policy decisions, infrastructure planning and industry engagement—all essential components for reducing emissions from the cruise sector and other maritime activities.

Hjelm emphasised the practical value of the tool during the event, stating:

“I really enjoyed taking part in the APP Winter Conference in beautiful Hawaii, where I presented how EPI supports ports in using data to track positive changes in emissions from cruise ships.”

In addition to demonstrating EPI’s analytical capabilities, Hjelm highlighted the importance of international dialogue in the global effort to reduce maritime emissions.

Interactions with port professionals from across the Pacific region provided valuable insights into local challenges, operational realities and environmental expectations.

“It was a great opportunity to learn more about a new region and to meet new ports and people, exchanging perspectives and experiences. These conversations matter, especially as we work toward measurable and lasting emission reductions.”

Hjelm´s work continues to shape how ports think about monitoring, reporting and acting on emissions in a manner that is both accountable and transparent.

He concluded by thanking the hosts:

“Thanks to the Association of Pacific Ports for hosting a valuable conference in such a great setting.”

With tools like EPI and leadership from figures such as this Faroese specialist, ports around the world are gaining better insight into their environmental footprints—and clearer pathways toward meaningful carbon reduction.
