One global framework to measure and reward cleaner ships

From January 2027, the Environmental Port Index (EPI) and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH)’s Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will operate as complementary modules under the IAPH umbrella, thanks to an agreement signed between EPI and OceanScore, the administrator of ESI – this combination will give ports and shipowners a more coherent way to measure and reward cleaner shipping, via OceanScore's shared and scalable technical platform.

The framework is anchored in an operating agreement between EPI and OceanScore and a cooperation agreement between EPI and IAPH. “This agreement brings together two complementary approaches and creates a stronger foundation for port-based environmental incentives worldwide,” says Patrick Verhoeven, Managing Director of IAPH.

ESI reflects a vessel’s overall environmental profile, while EPI uses actual operational data to measure its performance during individual port calls. Together, the two modules will give ports a broader basis for environmental incentive schemes and provide shipowners with a more consistent reporting framework.

“Bringing this methodology into a global framework will give ports and shipowners a unified, common solution to reward cleaner performance,” says Even Husby, CEO of EPI.
