Port of Vágur showcases growth and opportunity at annual job fair

The Port of Vágur participated in the annual local job fair in collaboration with Vágs Municipality, engaging directly with students interested in maritime careers and community development.

Marin H. Gaardlykke, Chairwoman of the Port of Vágur, delivered the keynote address, speaking about her responsibilities as a local politician and the importance of youth involvement in shaping the future of the island. She then officially opened the fair.

“Young people are essential to Vágur’s future,” Gaardlykke said. “By understanding the opportunities unfolding here, they can become active contributors to the next chapter of growth in our region.”

During the fair, the port’s developer, Edith Maria Samuelsen, and welfare manager, Magnus Pauli West, met with students to discuss ongoing development strategies and the port’s expanding role in the local economy.

Even without formal annual cargo statistics, official Faroese sources clearly indicate that Port of Vágur is expanding capacity, capabilities, and international interest. Three verified data points illustrate this momentum:

1. Significant expansion into the cruise sector

Vágur began entering the cruise industry in 2022 and has already received visits in 2023 and 2024, with multiple additional cruise ships requesting berths for coming years. [vagur.fo]

2. Strong physical infrastructure supporting maritime growth

The port maintains over 360 meters of quay length in its North Harbour, with depths ranging from 7 to 10 meters, enabling it to service a wide range of vessel types. [fms.fo]

3. Expanding operational capacity and storage facilities

The North Harbour includes an 8,000 m² open storage area and 1,700 m² indoor storage, strengthening Vágur’s ability to support logistics, maintenance, and offshore‑industry needs. [fms.fo]

These official data points reinforce Vágur’s tremendous potential—as a deep‑fjord harbour naturally protected from waves and currents, open 365 days a year, and strategically positioned near major fishing grounds and offshore routes. [fms.fo]

The job fair offered an opportunity for the Port of Vágur to share this evolving landscape with students — highlighting growing sectors, future job opportunities, and the port’s increasingly important role in regional innovation.
