British Oil Industry seeks closer cooperation with the Faroe Islands

The Faroese Government has reaffirmed its support for the exploration and potential development of oil, gas, and other natural resources in Faroese waters during a major energy conference in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Jacob Vestergaard, the Faroe Islands' Minister of Trade and Industry, attended the two-day gathering, which brought together senior representatives from across the Scottish energy sector, including oil and gas operators, service companies, and industry organisations.

The primary objective of the visit was to communicate the Faroese Government's continued support for exploration activities within Faroese territory and to underline the importance of future developments on the UK side of the maritime border. Discussions focused on the expectation that the British Government will soon make decisions that could allow further production activities in neighbouring areas, potentially creating new opportunities for energy-related developments in Faroese waters.

One of the key topics throughout the conference was the future of the Rosebank oil field, located close to the Faroese maritime boundary. Industry representatives highlighted the project's potential significance for the wider North Atlantic energy sector and its possible implications for future cross-border cooperation.

The minister attended the event as a guest of Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), which hosted the conference. According to participants, the Faroese delegation received a positive reception, with several leading figures from Scotland's energy industry expressing strong interest in expanding cooperation between Scotland and the Faroe Islands.

Also participating in the visit was Niels Christian Nolsøe, Director of Jarðfeingi, the Faroese Geological Survey. During his opening remarks, David Whitehouse, Chief Executive of Offshore Energies UK, specifically highlighted the potential for stronger energy collaboration with the Faroe Islands.

As part of the programme, Vestergaard also visited the safety training centre 3t in Dyce and toured the Port of Aberdeen, one of the United Kingdom's most important energy hubs.

The Port of Aberdeen is currently undergoing significant expansion and diversification.

Alongside its traditional offshore energy operations, the harbour hosts activities ranging from cruise shipping and commercial fishing to logistics and marine services. Looking ahead, industry stakeholders see substantial opportunities for the port to support the growing offshore wind sector and related services.

Commenting on the discussions in Aberdeen, Vestergaard emphasized the importance of maximizing domestic energy resources.

"I agree with many of the Scottish representatives that we should examine every opportunity to develop our own oil and gas resources rather than relying solely on imported hydrocarbons," he said.

The visit highlights the Faroese Government's ambition to strengthen ties with the Scottish energy industry while exploring new opportunities within the evolving North Atlantic energy landscape.
