Fire incident on new Smyril Line cargo vessel Skipanes

A fire broke out aboard Smyril Line’s new cargo vessel Skipanes on the afternoon of 2 September while the ship was operating in Asian waters.

The incident occurred in the engine room but was brought under control and extinguished within a short time.

All 23 crew members on board are safe, and no injuries have been reported.

At the time of the incident, Skipanes was approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Taiwan. The vessel will now proceed to a shipyard in China for inspections and further assessment. Until these investigations have been completed, it is not yet possible to determine when the ship will return to service.

FAS Overview

Smyril Line expressed regret that its new vessel had experienced an operational incident so early in its service.

However, the company emphasized its relief that no one was harmed and that all crew members are in good health. Family members and relevant parties have been informed of the situation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed and will be investigated as part of the vessel's technical inspection.
